  • Decorated in sumptuous blue, white and gold – the colours of royalty – the auditorium of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, an 18th-century architectural masterpiece designed by Victor Louis, is now the stage for the Opéra National de Bordeaux. In the course of its long history dotted with theatre plays, operas and concerts, the Grand Théâtre has played host to the most famous of artists.

Today directed by Thierry Fouquet, the Opéra National de Bordeaux presents primarily operas and ballets with exceptional artistic range : from Monteverdi to Britten via Mozart and Verdi…

The Opera has a very large permanent team of artistic personnel ; there are 110 musicians in the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, conducted by Paul Daniel, 38 dancers In the Ballet de l’Opéra de Bordeaux, directed by Charles Jude, and 37 members of the Opera Chorus under the artistic direction of Salvatore Caputo. They are accompanied each season by guest artists, and many famous singers, musicians, choreographers and dancers have performed in this magnificent theatre over the years : Liszt, Cinti-Damoreau, Falcon, Viardot, Talma, Nourrit, Duprez, Rubini, Petipa, Chaliapine, Schipa, and more recently Placido Domingo, Nathalie Dessay, Carolyn Carlson, Cecilia Bartoli…

Each year almost 200,000 spectators come through the doors of the Opéra National de Bordeaux, where, in addition to the artistic programme, they can enjoy open days, temporary exhibitions, and guided tours.
