The commune of Bonrepos-Riquet in the department “Haute Garonne” near Toulouse (300 inhabitants) has purchased in december 2007 the fine residence that Pierre Paul Riquet bild from 1652. The property of 29 hectares classified “Historic Monument” in 2008 and stamped “Renowned House” in 2011, contains a castle, an orangery, a glacier, a grotto, and three test catchment water areas.
From his purchase, a voluntary association non-profit-making (around 140 members) has been created with the objectives to promote for the public the property at the origin of South Canal. Association “Safeguard and Valorisation of Bonrepos-Riquet Property” in a general interest, performs regular maintenance operations and revalorization of the natural spaces and ensures the cultural development, in a tight partner commune process: public reception, guided visits and minor repairs on the buildings. The association implements cultural events for which other workshops provide contributions: sewing, calligraphy, dance, …
With the association support, the commune has opened a request for an integration and re-attachment of the property to the South Canal as UNESCO world heritage.
