RESEVOIR discovery area of the Canal du Midi : 31250 Revel – +33 (0)5 61 80 57 57
Pierre Paul Riquet, the XVIIth century figure from the Languedoc, achieved the age-old dream of connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The Palace of Versailles and the Canal du Midi are the greatest achievements during Louis the XIV th’s reign. The source of the Canal du Midi is in the Black Mountain in the Tarn, at La prise d’Alzeau.
It’s at the barrage of Saint-Ferréol where the canal water is stored that we can discover the first part of the canal.
Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Saint-Ferréol dam is the keystone to the canal’s water supply. Behind the dam, in what used to be the engineer’s house, is the RESEVOIR discovery area of the Canal du Midi. Here you can find a life-size presentation of the canal’s history with it’s engineering structures and ingenious water supplying system but also the great people who contributed to it’s creation.
